Anna Davis, a 16-year-old high-school sophomore, won the third edition of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur on Saturday.

Davis played flawlessly on the second nine with two birdies and seven pars to shoot 3-under 69 and enter the clubhouse at 1 under par.

At the time, she was trailing LSU’s Latanna Stone by two strokes. Stone had two holes remaining and was in the fairway at the par-4 17th, but she left her approach shot short of the green and chipped too far past the hole. She eventually three-putted for a double-bogey 6.

That dropped her into a share of the lead with Davis. Needing to make par at the 18th to force a playoff – or a birdie to win – Davis hit her tee shot into the second cut on the right. Her second shot finished shy of the green and she again chipped past the hole.

Davis missed her 15-foot par effort to shoot 72 and finish at even par, alongside LSU teammate Ingrid Lindblad (68).

Davis, from Steele Canyon High School in Spring Valley, California, shared the 18-hole lead after a 70 at Champions Retreat. She followed that with a 4-over 76, but rebounded with a closing 69 at Augusta National. Her closing stretch included birdies at the par-3 12th and par-5 13th, to go along with five finishing pars.
