A silver lining to TGL postponement? Let Tiger explain

Now that the TGL bubble has burst – literally – and the startup golf league’s inaugural season has been postponed a full year, until early 2025, one of TGL’s main investors, Tiger Woods, was asked about the major setback on Tuesday during his pre-tournament press conference for this week’s Hero World Challenge.

Woods was quick to point out the silver lining.

“I think it was moving very quickly, and I think we can take advantage of time delay,” Woods said. “I think that we can do it right, and I think all the parties that are involved really feel that this is going to be the best thing for it. There’s so many partners, so many people that are involved in this league that have had so much brand experience, and they want to get it right, and they have gotten it right, they’re billionaires. I think that if we’re able to capture that, I think, going into ’25, I think that it will be positive for all of us.”

Woods previously had released a statement following a Nov. 14 incident in which the inflatable dome that was part of TGL’s host arena, the SoFi Center, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, partially deflated. The were no injuries and most of the technology was not impacted, a TGL spokesperson said, but quickly the league announced that a Jan. 9, 2024, kickoff was not happening.

The decision, TGL explained, came after “reviewing short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the primetime sports television calendar.”

Woods’ initial statement was this: “I’ve been a believer in TGL, and as the momentum has built this past year, I’m even more excited about what this can become for fans of the game all around the world. Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great committed players.”
